  2. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, 20 March, 2018, arraigned Leeroy Egebe, (alias Amedeo Dante William, Alhassan Davide) before Justice E. A. Obile of the Federal High Court, sitting in Warri, Delta State on an 8-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of $18,023.96 (Eigteen Thousand, Twenty- Three Hundred Dollars, Ninety- Six Cent. Egebe’s troubles began when one Vivian Varotto-Guigoz, a citizen of Switzerland, petitoned the EFCC alleging that she met one Amedeo William Dante (the defendant) who claimed to be an Italian living in the United Kingdom on a social dating site called “Badoo”. They became lovers, exchanging emotions and later cash. She alleged that on several occasions, between 12 May and 14 October, 2015, she wired a total sum of CHF 196,701,44 and EUR 15, 957.43 to different individuals in the United Kingdom, Canada and Nigeria at the request of Dante, for sundry reasons which she later discovered to be fraudulent. The payments were allegedly made in five installments: two into British accounts belonging to Amedeo William Dante and Dittimi Tamara-Finide while three were made into Nigerian accounts belonging to Alhassan Davide and Edin Obaro. The petitioner also alleged that the defendant was reaching her through some English, Canadian and Nigerian telephone numbers. The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him. In view of his pleas, the prosecution counsel, M. T. Iko asked the court to fix a date for the commencement of trial. However, counsel to the defendant, K. D Alufe, made an 0ral application for bail for his client. He argued that the alleged offences were bailable and that the defendant did not jump an earlier administrative bail by the prosecution.. In his ruling, Justice Obile granted the defendant bail in the sum of N3, 000,000.00 (Three Million Naira), one surety in like sum. The surety must be a public servant in the service of Federal or Delta state government on grade level 12 and above. The defendant and the surety must depose to an affidavit of means amog other conditions. The matter was adjourned to 10 May, 2018 for trial, while the defendant was remanded in prison custody pending the perfection of his bail conditions.

  4. Nollywood Actress, Moji Olaiya passed away a few months after she gave birth to a baby, Mariam in Canada. She died on the 17th of May, 2017. The newborn daughter she left behind, Mariam Ashabi Moropeda, clocked one year yesterday.. and she’s growing beautifully. The family of the late actress has said that she was not poisoned, contrary to reports that went viral last year. The actress died in Canada on May 17, two months after delivering her second daughter. In a statement signed by her brother, Femi Olaiya, the family said an autopsy report revealed that she “died of a different cause that can be termed natural medical cause”. “The Olaiya Family appreciate the immense outpouring of love and affection the public showed the family since the sudden and untimely death of our beloved Sister, Moji Olaiya, and the huge support we received for her burial,” the statement read. “We also want to use this medium to especially thank the Burial committee and all those who were involved in helping to raise funds for the return of Moji’s remains to Nigeria, we are eternally grateful to you for rising above the grief to support the family. “This is also appreciating Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, erstwhile governor of Lagos State for his humane and philanthropic gesture in providing the required funds to transport Moji’s corpse back to Nigeria. Thank you, your Excellency. Indeed, Moji received burial befitting queens because of all your efforts. “We wish to use this opportunity to debunk claims circulating on social media that a friend in Canada poisoned Moji. An autopsy was conducted; the autopsy reports indicated that our dear sister died of a different cause that can be termed natural medical cause. “It is not the desire of the family to have anyone implicated in her death having seen the autopsy reports, therefore, we appeal to friends, fans and the general public to accept Moji’s death as an act of God though rather unfortunate.” The Nollywood star was buried at the Ebony Vault burial ground in Ikoyi , Lagos on Wednesday.
  5. Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA, have arrested and seized a trailer truck full of codeine syrup. According to information gathered, the arrest was made yesterday at Funtua area command of Katsina state. The seized drugs were taken to the state command for processing and investigation. Although the drug is not illegal but some Nigerians have abused cough syrup in a bid to get high – hence the tight scrutiny from security operatives.

The middle-aged man who is said to be married was caught by residents in Zamfara state while trying to allegedly kidnap a young victim. He was stripped Un.clad and beaten to a pulp by the mob as he was left bloodied before the arrival of security agents.
  8. Buhari Sacks Boroh, Appoints Dokubo (Photo)

    President Buhari on Tuesday sacked Brigadier-General Paul Boroh (Rtd) of his appointment as the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme for former Niger Delta militants. In his place, he has approved the appointment of Professor Charles Quaker Dokubo. The President has also directed the National Security Adviser (NSA) to carry out a full investigation into the activities of the Amnesty Programme from 2015 to date, especially allegations of financial impropriety and other acts that are allegedly detrimental to the objectives of the Presidential Amnesty Programme. Prof Dokubo is currently Director of Research and Studies at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs. He holds a Ph.D. in Strategic Studies from the University of Bradford, U.K, and hails from Abonema, Rivers State. Boroh who was at the presidential villa, Abuja last Friday, told State House correspondents that some people who called for his sack wanted business as usual. . Boroh said: “I want to let you know that what is happening in the Amnesty Programme is no more business as usual that is the bottom line of all that is happening. The programme actually is a security programme that has to do with critical stakeholders who drive the process in the programme. I’m only there to supervise what they are doing so that we can achieve the aim for which the programme was established, to ensure youth restiveness is not allowed and ensure peace and stability of the Niger Delta region.” Boroh was appointed as Special Adviser and Coordinator for the programme in July 2015.
  9. A suspected rapist was arrested by security operatives on Friday, March 9th, while trying to R@pe a schoolgirl. The suspect was immediately descended upon as he was mobbed and beaten mercilessly by the people around before the police intervened. The incident happened in Lundi, Masvingo area of Zimbabwe. One of the passersby who were present during the arrest – was spotted enjoying the ‘view’ of the suspect’s joystick before he was taken away by the police.
  10. The mystery surrounding the death of two young lovers in Delta state is yet to unraveled by police authorities. According to reports, a boyfriend and girlfriend were found dead yesterday morning in the apartment of a friend where they went to sleep in Mosogar, Sapele area of Delta state. According to Sapele Oghenek, the pair identified as Matthew and Bose were said to have gone out to buy Suya on Thursday night before the boyfriend took Bose to his friend’s house when they went to sleep. The owner of the house and his girlfriend was said to have slept in the room while Matthew and his girlfriend Bose slept in the parlor. Their friend was reportedly shocked to have woken up the next morning and discovered that the young lovers had died in the parlor. Their corpses have been deposited at the mortuary and the owner of the house detained by the police. According to reports, some people are saying the pair may have died from the Suya they ate the previous night while others are saying they may have died after inhaling generator fumes. Whatever the case might be, may their souls rest in peace.
