  1. Nigeria has warned that the continued existence of nuclear weapons remained a threat to all mankind. Nigeria stated this in its statement to the General Debate of the 2018 Substantive Session of the UN Disarmament Commission by Faisal Ibrahim, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the UN. “The cost of maintenance and modernisation of these weapons are both outrageous and inexcusable when compared to resources allocated by States for more useful and productive ventures. “These more useful and productive ventures could further the growth, development, prosperity and other peaceful and positive articulation of human endeavours,” Nigeria said. Nigeria highlighted the 1996 Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which affirmed that the threat or use of nuclear weapons constituted a crime against humanity. The country added that the ICJ’s opinion also affirmed that the threat or use of nuclear weapons constituted a violation of international law, including international humanitarian law. Nigeria reiterated its view about the catastrophic humanitarian consequences that could result from either a deliberate use and/or unintentional explosion of nuclear weapons. It said these consequences should serve as a compelling reason for all states to address the question of the continued possession of nuclear weapons. “Nuclear weapons still remain the ultimate agents of mass destruction and their total elimination should be the final objective of all disarmament processes within the broad spectrum of goals being pursued by the United Nations. “To this end, my delegation heartily welcomes the adoption of the landmark Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons which opened for signature on 20 September 2017. “My delegation remains proud to have participated actively in the processes leading to its adoption, as well as being one of the first countries to sign the treaty. “Our commitment was guided by Nigeria’s principled position on the denuclearization of the world.” Nigeria stressed that the universalisation of the Non- Proliferation Treaty (NPT) was dependent upon strict compliance with its three pillars: disarmament, non-proliferation and peaceful uses of nuclear energy. “As a State Party to the Treaty of Pelindaba, Nigeria welcomes the establishment of Nuclear Weapon Free Zones (NWFZ) in parts of the world. “The treaty serves as a shield for the continent of Africa, including preventing the stationing of nuclear explosive devices on the continent and prohibiting testing of nuclear weapons.” Nigeria noted that the NWFZ serves as a measure to ensure a world free from the fear or possibility of the use of nuclear weapons. It, therefore, called on all Member States to support efforts to replicate it in the remaining parts of the world, including in the Middle East. Nigeria stressed the need for peaceful uses of outer space, particularly, preventing the weaponisation of the outer space to preserve peace and security to the benefit of all mankind. “In this regard, we strongly support the negotiation of a treaty preventing an arms race in outer space and for interim transparency and confidence-building measures toward that end. “Nigeria remains committed to using its space science capabilities for developmental purposes and, to that end, we have embarked on several developmental projects. “Some of which include desertification sensitivity index, population dissymmetric analysis and carbon emission assessment, among others. “Nigeria firmly believes that space technology has the immense potential to benefit both developed and developing countries. “And in this regard the UN needs to promote equal and non-discriminatory access to outer space, irrespective of levels of social, economic or scientific development. “Nigeria wishes to highlight the efforts of UN Regional Centres for Peace and Disarmament in terms of their contributions to disarmament measures and other future challenges.” It noted the valuable input of the Centre in Africa, particularly in its efforts to ensure the provision of a robust programme on capacity-building and in extending technical assistance to many States on the continent.
  2. Johnson Dwayne popularly referred to as ‘The Rock’ has opened up on a secret battle with depression that he has been harboring for 30 years. Despite being Hollywood’s highest paid actor and a global superstar after a successful wrestling career, Johnson had a tough upbringing. The 6ft 5in Johnson said his mother tried to commit suicide after they were evicted from their apartment – and it left a mark on him. Johnson told the Express, “She got out of the car on Interstate 65 in Nashville and walked into an oncoming traffic. Big rigs and cars were swerving out of the way. “Struggle and pain is real. I was devastated and depressed. “I reached a point where I didn’t want to do a thing or go anywhere. I was crying constantly.” Despite being just 15, Johnson told how he saved her from the road by pulling her back but his battles didn’t stop there. Years after his dream of becoming a professional American Football player were shattered by a succession of injuries. His girlfriend then broke up with him, a period which Johnson called his “absolute worst time.” But he battled back… After carving a successful career as a WWE wrestling, he moved on to acting with such films as Fast and Furious, the new Jumanji and his latest offering, Rampage. But he never forgot his battles. When a fan recently told him he was suffering depression, Johnson answered: “I hear you. I’ve battled that beast more than once.” The Rock, 45, from Hayward, California, was last seen in WWE defeating Erick Rowan in a record-breaking six seconds at WrestleMania 32. Earlier this month he responded to Roman Reigns calling him out for a WrestleMania showdown … with a metaphorical ‘just bring it’. Widely regarded as one of the greatest-ever WWE talents, The Rock was named the world’s highest-paid actor and one of the planet’s 100 most influential people in 2016
  3. Indulging in pasta could help people lose weight, new research suggests. Eating just over three servings of the Italian staple every seven days causes people to lose around 1.1lb (0.5kg) in 12 weeks, a study found today. Unlike most other refined carbohydrates, pasta, such as spaghetti and macaroni, has a lower GI index and therefore does not cause extreme blood-sugar spikes, according to researchers. Previous research suggests low-GI foods are more satisfying and therefore delay people’s hunger, while therefore limiting their calorie intakes. Lead author Dr John Sievenpiper, from St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, said: ‘In weighing the evidence, we can now say with some confidence that pasta does not have an adverse effect on body weight outcomes when it is consumed as part of a healthy dietary pattern.’ Speaking of the results, Dr Sievenpiper said: ‘The study found that pasta didn’t contribute to weight gain or increase in body fat. ‘Contrary to concerns, perhaps pasta can be part of a healthy diet such as a low GI diet.’ The researchers add further investigation is required to determine if pasta can be eaten as part of other diets, aside from low-GI plans, without causing weight gain. The researchers analyzed a total of 2,448 people from 29 studies investigating the affects of eating pasta over other carbohydrates. The participants ate around 3.3 servings of pasta a week. A serving equals approximately half a cup of cooked pasta. The findings were published in the journal BMJ Open. Eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains slashes people’s risk of depression This comes after research released last February suggested eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains slash people’s risk of depression by more than 10 percent. Following the so-called ‘DASH diet’ reduces people’s likelihood of developing the mental-health disorder by up to 11 percent, a study by Rush University in Chicago found. Those who eat a typical Western diet, which is rich in processed foods and sugar, are more at risk of suffering depression, the research adds. Researchers add further studies are required to determine the association between diet and mental health but add simple lifestyle changes may be preferred over medication to control such conditions. Previous research suggests eating lots of fresh produce benefits people’s mental health by improving their moods, giving them more energy and helping them to think clearly. Around seven percent of adults in the US suffer from depression every year.

  5. The Pope asked for forgiveness from society for Catholic men who use prostitutes, describing them as ‘criminals’ who are ‘not making love’. People should become ‘counter-terror citizens’, police say his frank comments came in a question and answer session in Rome with young people from around the world. Blessing Okoedion, a 32-year-old Nigerian who was once a victim of human trafficking, told the Pope she was troubled that many clients of prostitutes on the streets of Rome are Catholics. She said: ‘I ask myself and I ask you, is it possible for a Church that is still too male chauvinist to be able to question itself truthfully about this high demand by clients?’ Francis said that in Italy it was likely that some 90% of male clients of prostitutes are baptised Catholics. He added: ‘I would like to take advantage of this moment to ask forgiveness from you (exploited women) and society for all the Catholics who carry out this criminal act. ‘I think of the disgust these girls must feel when men make them do these things.’ He added: ‘It is a sickness of humanity, a sickness of looking at society in a certain way, a crime against humanity,” he said. The Pope urged young people to fight against prostitution, and rejected the idea that visiting prostitutes is harmless. He said: ‘Who does this is a criminal. This is not making love, this is torturing a woman. Let’s not confuse terms. This is criminal, a sick mentality.
  6. BBNaija housemate Nina, vowed before coming to the reality show not to fall in love with anyone. In a late night discussion with her in-house boyfriend Miracle, Nina admitted she had now lost focus on the N45 million grand prize which was her main aim of coming into to the show. Nina said; "This is why it's not good to predict. Before coming here, I vowed never to fall in love but to focus on how to grab the money, but now see me. "I have fallen in love that everyone is aware it. Yes, I once said no love. No love! But all that is gone. I have fallen in love." Recall that, Nina earlier revealed to everyone she has a boyfriend outside the house and still loves him. 7. A Kenyan Clergyman - Rev. Vincent Mulwa of Christ Pilgrim Restoration Centre, Kenya, has come out to challenge the Christian doctrine that men should only marry one wife. In an interview with Kenya's The Daily Nation, Rev. Mulwa said Africans bought the world views of European missionaries who brought Christianity into Africa and abandoned polygamy, a practice that was rife even among the people who lived during biblical times. Rev Mulwa said he wants Christian leaders to review teachings on monogamous marriages, claiming there is no verse in the Bible supporting it. He says this is necessary to "save a generation of women who are aging in church without husbands". Rev Mulwa added; "I have been in the ministry for 38 years, preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ but now I have realized that we ministers of the gospel have lost our believers," "I have never seen anywhere in the Bible where prophets and preachers prayed for single ladies to get married. The Bible people were polygamous and everyone had a husband," he says, adding that widows were allowed to become concubines. He says polygamy was commonly practiced by many African traditional communities and the Jewish culture was also polygamous, adding that it only began to fade with the introduction of Christianity. "As far as the Bible is concerned, the number of wives or concubines that one has does not matter and is not a standard of holiness. I have come out to tell Christians that we must preach the true gospel and allow our men in the church to marry as many wives as they want. Polygamy is not about men needing many wives but it's about women needing husbands." According to the cleric, the Bible has only come out strongly to condemn adultery, which is taking another man's wife. The reverend argues that the fact that the missionaries, who mostly came from Rome, began to preach monogamy does not mean that this is what the Bible teaches. "It is unfortunate for the Church that today when our dear brothers and sisters attend theological schools, they are fed with so much gentile-tilted theology that upon graduation, they are well equipped to vigorously convince the world to buy into the Roman immigration of Christianity," He says Christianity is not an American or European culture. Rather, it is God's way of reaching and dealing with humankind. Rev Mulwa, who says he is officially married to one wife, says he was preaching in a church he started 20 years ago but had to leave the church because his wife and members disagreed with his polygamy teaching. "I told my wife that as much as she doesn't want to agree with me, I will continue preaching the gospel of polygamy until the whole world hears of it because that is the true gospel," he says. When asked if he has secret wives he responded: "The number of wives I have is not an issue. If I have one wife or more, I will not be holier than the other. That's why I am saying Christian men should be allowed to marry many wives." His interpretation of the Bible is that it has not condemned polygamy. Rather, it was practiced widely by men of God in the Bible. "Polygamy is an acceptable practice. No lady should stay without a husband. Christianity remains the holiest faith, but when preached from the perspective of the European and American gentiles, then it is definitely the filthiest religion on earth." He gives the example of some of the men in the Bible like Abraham and David who married more than one wife and had concubines with whom they got children. "The holiness was in how these men dealt with their many wives and concubines and God had no problem with them," he says. The reverend says it is wrong to imagine that God would have created two wives for Adam as "God created them so that they may fill the world" He noted that in the Bible, some women seemed to have been in a complex situation such that remarrying was out of thought. They ended up being concubines. But even for concubines, there was discipline, he says, and a man found with another man's concubine was to be beaten. "This was a lesser punishment compared to when you were found with someone's wife where the sentence was death by stoning," he adds. Source: nation.co.ke

  10. The Senator representing Kano South, Kabiru Gaya, on Thursday gave an indication that President Muhammadu Buhari will be seeking re-election. Shortly after meeting the President inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the senator told State House correspondents that Buhari will, during his second term, complete whichever projects he cannot complete before the end of his first term. “On road projects, we have to thank President Buhari for putting extra efforts and may Allah continue to give him good health and strength to continue. “I know he is going to inaugurate some projects in 2018 and those not completed will be completed during his second term,” he said. Gaya said he was in the Presidential Villa to thank Buhari for visiting Kano State recently. He said he was happy that the present administration had awarded the road projects from Kano to Abuja which will cost N165bn. The senator said, “I am the Chairman of Works Committee.
