  3. Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Tuesday told the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, to go home and use stones to defend themselves. Ortom explained that he was tired of keeping IDPs in camps over the uncontrollable killings in the state. He, therefore, charged residents to embrace self-defense. The governor said this during his visit to the displaced persons after armed herdsmen attacked Naka, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State. This was after the Chairman, Gwer West Local Government Council of Chiefs, Chief Daniel Abomtse said that 24 persons were killed on Thursday’s attack on Mbapa, Mbapupuu, Mbachohon, and Enger, all in Agagbe District in Gwer-West LGA. He said, “David in the Bible used an ordinary stone to defeat his enemy, it is now time for you to stay at home and use the stone in your homes to defend yourself instead of running away. “I believe in the rule of law, equity, and fairness, but I cannot continue to keep IDPs and l can’t afford to have another IDPs in Gwer West. This must stop. We must stop truncating the future of our younger generation. “When we allow laws to be violated and nobody takes action, it then allows for impunity and when you give room to impunity, it will result to anarchy which will in turn breed a lawless society. “Therefore, we the citizens must rise up to support the security agencies by way of providing lawful and necessary logistics such as information, equipment, and financial support to back up their operations. “Just yesterday (Monday), a soldier was killed in Guma, security agents are not spared. Security challenges are enormous. The gruesome murder of 24 people by Fulani herdsmen is quite condemnable. “Time has come if you are willing to live in Benue State, you must be ready and willing to be law abiding.” The governor added that the state government was working with traditional rulers and other necessary organs of government to strengthen the vigilante team so as to give it full legal backing that would enable the group to assist the security personnel in curbing criminal activities in the state.

It’s welcome development Anambra State Anambra State government reacted last night on the new status of the state as officially an oil producing state, describing it as a welcome development. Speaking with Vanguard on the issue, the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. C Don Adinuba, however observed that the quantity of oil produced in the state was still small, hoping that with further exploration, more oil would be discovered in the state. He said: “This is cheering news, but we must realize that the quantity of oil produced in Anambra State cannot be compared to what is produced in other oil -producing states in the country. “The oil in Anambra is produced from marginal oil fields, which may not immediately attract international oil companies. For now, the oil is produced through barges as opposed to pipeline drilling that carries large quantity of crude oil. “But we are grateful for this recognition, which will surely shore up the state’s revenue, even if marginally.” Responding, the State Chairman of Anambra Traditional Rulers Council and Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, commended him for coming to brief them and disclosed that the traditional rulers would set up a committee to be headed by the traditional ruler of Aguleri, Igwe Christopher Idigo, to look into his briefings and take a decisive steps. 8. The staff of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba decided to embark on a strike action from Monday 9th April over 10 months salary arreas after series of promises by the management to pay the outstanding arreas but to no avail. To their surprise, on Thursday the management issued the attached memo to all the departments of the school threatening sanction on any staff who decides to join the strike action. I was really astonished reading this memo to workers being owed 10 months salary and being threatened to swallow the bitter pill and keep moving How have these people been managing to cater for their families all these while remain a mystery. My neighbour who lectures in this institution cried when her kids were sent home for school fees earlier this year while a tricycle (Keke napep) rider was able to clear his own kids school fees in one payment. Funny enough the acting rector of this institution, Prof. Friday Eboh is rocking a 25000 naira daily suit for over a year now when the school has a well-furnished duplex for its rectors.

Folarin made this known on Wednesday while speaking with journalists shortly after he paid a condolence visit to the Ibadan residence of a third republic Senator and Agbaakin of Ogbomosoland, Chief Ayantayo Ayandele, who died recently. The ex-Senate leader said contrary to rumour, he was yet to declare his governorship ambition because the decision of who would succeed the present governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi rested in the hands of the governor. Folarin said “In 2015, I was in the PDP and we didn’t have a sitting governor then but now in APC, we have a sitting governor who is doing well, he will determine a lot of things. “I am ambitious, I want to be governor, I want to be President if I get the support, at least, I am a Senator, former Senate leader but I am not also stupid because I know that it is not possible to be anything without the support of the man who is leaving, that is why you don’t see me wasting my time. “I am experienced in the game, but governor Ajimobi is the main man; if we don’t have a sitting governor, you can scheme and there is no better schemer than me but we have a sitting governor who holds the ace. “If he (governor Ajimobi) says Teslim Folarin, I want you to succeed me, yes sir, if he says Teslim Folarin I want you to return to the Senate, yes sir, if he says Teslim Folarin I want you to stay at home, yes sir, but he has not told anybody anything”. The ex-Senate leader, who was accompanied by some of his loyalists, described the deceased as a man who lived a simple life. He said he knew the deceased in 2003 before his election to the Senate and since then he had continued to learn many things from him. According to him, “He lived a simple life. I know him in 2003 during my electioneering campaign, he is a very straightforward person, since then he has continued to be a role model. “I even said he is not supposed to be a politician, because politicians don’t behave that way. I was surprised about his behaviour.” The Senator died on Saturday 24th March and would be buried on Friday 13th April at First Baptist Church Ogbomoso.
  11. 3 POLICEMEN ARRESTED FOR DEMANDING N10,000 BRIBE FROM JOURNALISTS IN IMO STATE NEMESIS CAUGHT UP WITH THREE POLICEMEN AFTER THEY REPORTEDLY DEMANDED A SUM OF 10,000 NAIRA BRIBE FROM SOME JOURNALISTS IN IMO STATE. The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Chris Ezike, has detained three policemen attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the command for allegedly collecting a N10,000 bribe from some journalists after threatening to frame them on Sunday. Speaking with The Punch on Tuesday, The CP said he had given the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department seven days to conclude the investigation into the matter. Ezike said the policemen would face an orderly room trial if found culpable of the allegations. He said, “The three policemen are in detention now. I have directed the DC SCIID to investigate the matter. “I have equally directed him to reach out to the complainants, because as we speak, nobody has reported the incident apart from what we saw in the media. “The Inspector General of Police is passionate about discipline and excellence. The allegation is corruption with impunity.” It is understood that some policemen had arrested some journalists on Sunday in Owerri, namely Juachi Ochu, (www.profjay.com), Matthew Okache (www.voplink.com), Williams George (www.touristtv.com) and Trinity Jesam (detailing cross river) and demanded that they should part with the sum of N10,000 before getting their freedom. 12. Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai of Kaduna State has said that he did not attack the founder of Microsoft, Mr Bill Gate over Nigeria’s economic recovery and growth plan. Speaking during the closing ceremony of the Kaduna Investment Summit (KADINVEST 3.0) on Thursday, El-Rufai said though, there was nothing wrong in attacking Bill Gate, he never did, but merely put things in proper perspective. He insisted that Gate got it wrong in his opinion on which tier of government should invest more in education and healthcare. El-Rufai explained, “Coming to the economic recovery growth plan, we were all involved in it as state governments and we all keyed into it. The whole idea is that we internalise the plan and support the macro plan. That is what we are doing in Kaduna. We have our own development plan which aligns with the Federal Government economic recovery growth plan. “A few weeks ago, when Microsoft founder Bill Gate came to Nigeria and appealed to the Nigerian government to invest more in education, I made a comment that was reported widely as attacking Bill Gate. It was not an attack on Bill Gate, it merely putting things in the contest. “Mr Gate observed that, in the economic recovery and growth plan, there was not enough money for human capital development, for Health and Education and I did not disagree. What I merely pointed out is that the economic recovery and growth plan has numbers that reflected Federal Government’s investment in health and education. “But the federal government only dealt with tertiary education and healthcare to a large extent. The bulk of education and healthcare investment are subnational because of primary education, junior secondary education and primary health care where most of the problems are, are all within the purview of state government, just like secondary healthcare are all under the state government. “What I told Mr Gate is that you have identified the problem correctly, but you are looking at the wrong tier of government to handle it. The state and local governments have the responsibilities to invest in education and healthcare. So, it is up to state governments to invest more in education and healthcare and I gave an example of what we are doing in Kaduna and also urged my colleagues, the Governors to do same. Because, unless the state governments do so, the country will be clapping with one hand.” “That is what I said, but it was misrepresented to mean that, I was attacking Bill Gate. There is nothing wrong with attacking Bill Gate, we can differ, but that is not what I happened, I merely explained the context, where the investment should be. “But, I must add that, Bill Gate is a big partner, he has invested $1.6billion in Nigeria. And a large percentage of that money was invested in Kaduna State. I will not disclose how much, because other states will be envious.” El-Rufai explained.
