  1. Ahead of the 2019 presidential election, the battle to unseat President Muhammadu Buhari of the ruling All Progressives Congress has taken another dimension as a political party, Alliance for New Nigeria, ANN, yesterday joined forces with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and others to campaign against President Buhari. Adebola said: “The reality is how can we explain the continuous insecurity and the ravaging killer herdsmen? Even when the core of the government focus is to deliver security but since the inception of this administration, the country has witnessed more of security breaches and senseless killings in virtually every part of the country with no one apprehended, or prosecuted. “How can we explain the failure in the fight against corruption even when the reason Nigerians voted for this government was essentially because of the stealing that was going on in government? “And right now, the same is the order of the day in the nose of the current government. Monies are swallowed by monkeys and snakes; questionable list of looters. 7. A group of Catholic priests in Brazil have been arrested, accused of embezzling £426,000 (N218,000,000) of church donations, funeral fees and fundraising cash. The Bishop of Formosa, Jose Ribeiro, along with five clergymen and three lay people were detained in prison in Goiás this week charged with stealing over £426,000 (N218,000,000) from church funds. A police raid on one of the priests’ home saw officers prised open a false wall in to find some £19,200 (N9,538,000) in plastic bags hidden in a secret storage space. It’s alleged the money was stolen over a three-year period from tithes, donations, fundraising events and from fees collected for ceremonies such as baptisms and weddings. According to state prosecutors, the bishop, who was appointed to the Formosa diocese in 2014, is suspected of leading a sophisticated scheme that diverted funds from church coffers. Phone taps uncovered the alleged web of deceit with conversations apparently revealing how the group laundered the money by purchasing a cattle ranch, a lottery agency, mobile phones, luxury cars, designer watches and gold chains. Large amounts of cash in foreign currencies were also f Accused: Bishop Jose Ribeiro is suspected of leading a sophisticated scheme that diverted funds from church coffers. Prosecutor Fernanda Balbinot, said: ‘There were indications the money was used for personal expenses and that cars from the Formosa diocese were used for private purposes. ‘Instead of presenting tax bills and expense receipts with the correct amount, documents were allegedly produced saying there was nothing to declare.’ The investigation is reported to have also uncovered evidence that priests, involved in the scheme, paid the bishop a monthly ‘protection allowance’ of between £1,500 to £2,100 (N753,000 to N1,054,000) to keep their jobs. Prosecutor Douglas Chegyry said to Brazilian media: ‘The information we have obtained is that in order to remain in the more profitable parishes that generated more money, the priests paid a cash allowance to the bishop.’ They also seized three iPhones, a Macbook and found more money hidden in draws around the home which the defendant claimed did not belong to him. Police officers were later filmed taking hours to count the haul. The investigation into the Formosa Diocese accounts began last year after members of the congregation alleged irregularities and misuse of assets by the Catholic Church. Churchgoers also claimed the expenses of the episcopal house rose disproportionately, from £1,000 to £7,500 (N502,000 to N3,765,000) following the arrival of Bishop Ribeiro. At the time, the cleric denied any wrongdoing. Prosecutors have charged the defendants with misappropriation, money laundering, ‘ideological falsehood’ and criminal association. Lawyers for the accused refute the charges and said they will prove their clients innocence. Two days after the arrests, Pope Francis named Father Paulo Mendes, who is archbishop of Uberaba, as a temporary replacement in the Goiás diocese which has 33 churches distributed over 20 parishes.

  13. A Nigerian man and Facebook user, Ukachukwu Igboamusi, has taken to the platform to narrate his encounter with a physically challenged mother of three who was taking her kids to school in Owerri, Imo State. According to him, it is a big stress for the physically challenged woman to take her little children to school everyday and bring them back because of her condition. Mr Ukachukwu revealed why taxi drivers may be reluctant to help her as they may spend more time in taking her in with her wheel chair. He further solicited for support and help from government, individuals etc for the woman to take her children to school everyday. Here is what he wrote… I stood for about 10 minutes this morning watching this woman and her three kids at government house round about trying to board a taxi going to Owerri city school. One of the child hid at her back in this picture was trying to push her. The one that hid at her back and the one wearing blue are twin. Its wasn’t easy for her to get a taxi due to her conditions. The taxi drivers may feel that it would be waste of time going to help her in, take her wheel chair into the booth before continuing their journey. To me, it would be a very big stress for this woman considering the age of her little children, taking them to school everyday and bring them back. I feel that any help rendered to this woman in taking her children to school everyday would be highly appreciated. No one had the intention of seeing his or herself in this situation but we can’t blame her. She need our help both from the government angle, cooperate bodies and individuals.

  16. A Chinese baby born with three legs due to an extremely rare fault in pregnancy has had the extra limb removed. Surgeons revealed the extra leg didn’t belong to the boy. It was the remnants of his partially formed, parasitic twin. Parasitic twins arise when identical twins fail to separate, and the condition occurs in around one in a million live births. It is unclear why this occurs, but may be due to a restricted blood supply during pregnancy, which leads to the death and partial absorption of one of the twins. Xiao Fei and his family come from far-flung Xinjiang in western China. His parasitic twin hadn’t been detected prior to his birth because his mother had not undergone regular pregnancy checks, said the report. After Xiao Fei was born, his family took him across China to look for treatment and they were finally admitted into the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Centre. The boy’s surgeon Chen Qiu described Xiao Fei’s condition as ‘highly complicated’. Mr Chen told Shanghai Dragon Television ahead of the operation that Xiao Fei’s middle leg would be removed because it did not have any function. However while Xiao Fei’s right leg would be kept, it was born deformed because its foot was shaped like a hand and could not function properly. Therefore, Mr Chen said he and his team would not only remove Xiao Fei’s middle leg, but also cut off the foot on Xiao Fei’s right leg before transplanting the foot on the extra leg onto his right leg. In addition to the parasitic twin, Xiao Fei was diagnosed with a series of other conditions, including an undescended testicle, abdominal hernia and congenital heart disease. These conditions increased the difficulties of the operation, said Mr Chen. Bao Juan, the director of the Department of Urology of the hospital, said surgeons would bring Xiao Fei’s right testicle down from the abdomen to its usual place during the same operation. The operation started from 10am and finished at 7:35pm. Surgeons claimed it a success. Xiao Fei’s father Ma Xiaolong told Shanghai Dragon Television: ‘I thank the doctors very much. I was so nervous sitting outside the surgery room, but now after I see my child, I’m not nervous any more.’ Zhu Tongyu, the director of Shanghai Public Health Clinical Centre, said the success of the operation was significant because of the rarity of the condition. Mr Zhu also said the operation could ensure Xiao Fei to live a relative normal life, however Xiao Fei’s kneecaps are missing, so further surgery will be planned when the boy grows a bit older.

He added: ‘I would like to take advantage of this moment to ask forgiveness from you (exploited women) and society for all the Catholics who carry out this criminal act. ‘I think of the disgust these girls must feel when men make them do these things.’ He added: ‘It is a sickness of humanity, a sickness of looking at society in a certain way, a crime against humanity,” he said.
