  6. President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday pleaded with Nigerians to be patient with him on his administration’s ongoing anti-corruption war. He promised that the war against corruption will be prosecuted with the highest regard to due process and respect for human rights. According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President spoke at a meeting he had with religious leaders in Kano, on Thursday, in the course of his two-day state visit. “When I came in uniform as military Head of State, we locked every suspect in Kirikiri prisons until they proved that they were not guilty. “Under the constitution, everyone is innocent until proven guilty. That is the constitution and we will abide by it,” the President was quoted as saying. Buhari was also reported to have reaffirmed his support for the proposed anti-corruption courts. He said to strengthen judicial integrity and the rule of law, such courts must be manned by “incorruptible judges.”
  7. President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday decorated two prominent Nigerians, Adesoji Adesina and Bruce Onobrakpeya with the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM). NAN reports that NNOM is an academic award conferred on distinguished academicians and intellectuals who have made outstanding contributions to the academic, growth and development of Nigeria. The event which took place in the executive chamber of the Presidential Villa was performed on the President’s behalf by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. Mr. Adesina was recognised for his research work in engineering technology while Mr. Onobrakpeya was honoured for his creativity in arts and humanities spanning more than 60 years. The President noted that the awardees distinguished themselves in their various disciplines adding that the award was the highest bestowed on any individual by the country for intellectual achievement of national and global importance. He noted that the awardees brought to 75 the number of such recipients since its introduction 38 years ago. According to him, the recipients epitomised the highest degree of innovation and creativity. He noted that Adesina developed many chemical materials as well as trained many graduates including 42 PhD alumni now professors in highly ranked institutions and petrochemical industries. He added that Onobrakpeya since pre-independence projected the African personality, propagated the concept of natural synthesis and advocated important social causes through arts. The President noted that Onobrakpeya had shown that the artist was not just an entertainer but also a social commentator. “Every winner of the NNOM is unique and on behalf of the President and the people of Nigeria, I congratulate you both on this great achievement. “You are not just national treasures; you are now important milestones in the chequered history of Nigeria’s upward trajectory. “Your stories and attainments now inspire the future; it is on the steady shoulders of your achievements that the coming generations of Nigerian artists and scientists will stand with confidence and hope. “This is the awesome responsibility that you bear,’’ the President noted. The President commended the board of the NNOM Awards and the assessors for a job well done and urged them not to rest on their oars. Accordingly, he promised that the administration would study the recommendations in the communiqué of the annual forum of the laureates and would continue to support the development of research innovation capacity. The President noted that Nigeria is a nation of great people and talent noting that the nation’s human capital “is the greatest resource that we have not our crude oil or solid minerals or land.”

As part of his activities in the UK, the Arole Oodua and Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II has signed a Scholarship Memorandum Of Understanding with the University of Oxford to enable him assist students in the study of African studies. Ooni Ogunwusi who was hosted by the University’s Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dr Robert Easton on Monday 27th November, 2017 signed the scholarship agreement in partnership with the University’s African Studies Centre (ASC) saying it is a dream come true. Presenting the Spiritual leader of Yoruba race worldwide to the Oxford University management team led by the Pro-Vice Chancellor, the Director of African Studies Centre, Professor Wale Adebanwi said the scholarship is for the Postgraduate students in Africa studies. He declared Ooni Ogunwusi as the first African leader to be so honoured by Oxford, describing him as the messiah sent by God to revitalize the dying African Culture and tradition. The Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dr Robert Easton expressed optimism that the number number of Nigerian students in Oxford will increase with the Ooni Ogunwusi/Oxford MSc Scholarship Scheme. He commended the highly revered monarch for his pragmatic approach to ensuring a better society for the Africans and the mankind, saying the University is motivated by Ooni to continue welcoming more Nigerians into the school. “We welcome a lot of Nigerians here yearly and we do give the unequaled qualitative education preparing them for leadership in the global society both in public and private sectors. “Your Majesty, we have about 60 Nigerian students here which is still very low compared to South Africa’s 150 students. Am sure this your scholarship partnership with us will surely help in increasing the number of the students from Nigeria yearly.” Ooni in his speech thanked the Oxford University for the appointment of a Nigerian from the State of Osun as the first African to head the African Studies Centre of the prestigious University. He called Professor Wale Adebanwi his good subject and a great son of Africa who is worthy of the position, saying Africans should tell the African stories. “Seeing Professor Adebanwi today in good spirit of origination makes me very proud as his father because this is the first time a black man would be serving in the. capacity, for this, I heartily thank the authorities of this school. “Africa must become a place of pride and we must join hands to make it happen. There was nothing like Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, South Africa before, we used to be one single people of one humanity, one race, and one source with several Kingdoms. “Nobody can tell our stories, we are the ones to tell our stories. We must know where we are coming from, where we are and where we are going. “As the Arole Oodua and Spiritual Leader of Yorubaland, I congratulate Professor Wale Adebanwi and Am very happy to be associated with you and African Studies Centre of Oxford University,” Ooni said. The Birmingham City University also had earlier on Friday 24th 2017 announced a plan to establish partial scholarships for Yoruba students in honour of the king, saying the University has a long and proud history with Nigeria. The Vice-Chancellor of Birmingham City University, Professor Philip Plowden who stated this during a programme organized for the king was corroborated by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of the West Midlands in UK, Dr Beverly Lindsay. Dr Lindsay said that the turnout of the African students to welcome the Ooni to the University attests to the acceptability of continent of Africa to the great University. She urged Ooni to see the entire Commonwealth family as his constituency. “As Her Majesty the Queen’s Representative here, I am delighted to welcome you to the city of Birmingham which is the Heart of England with a historical vibrant religious and cultural diverse community. “Your Majesty, nations that share a common respect for humanity can proudly call ourselves the Commonwealth of nations. We are bounded by history, shaped by culture and enriched by our people. “We are optimistic to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and we hope that you will visit us during the games,” the Vice Lord-Lieutenant said. The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, disclosed this on Friday at the 47th convocation of the university. Ozumba said the total number of graduates and diplomas stood at 7,830, saying: "In this 47th convocation of the UNN, 132 graduates bagged first class degrees." "I commend these first class graduates for their academic excellence,'' he sadded. However, Ozumba did not give the number of graduates who had second class, third class degrees or ordinary pass. The VC said the university, which had two convocations within one year, was a practical demonstration of his administration's resolve to improve the academic curriculum of the university. "Having a second convocation within one year shows an improvement on the university's curriculum as well as a timely release of the computer-based results in line with the best academic practices,'' he said. He said his administration would offer quality education and professional programme to build the university that would serve as intellectual and cultural centre for the promotion of new ideas and partnerships. In his remarks, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Mr. Micheal Olorunfemi, urged the graduating students to be good ambassadors of their alma-mater wherever they go. "Today is an occasion to celebrate the successes of our children and wards who devoted themselves to academic demands. "Today is a day to reward their devotions and sacrifices to academics. "I urge you graduates to be good ambassadors of your alma mater by doing what is right as well as contributing your quota to improving the university's standard."
