  1. Four members of a family were Wednesday butchered in Taraba State by suspected herdsmen. A 9-month old toddler, however, survived the attack. Police Commissioner, David Akinremi, who confirmed the attack and killings, said the incident took place in Bikka ‎village of Takum local government area, the home of Governor Darius Ishaku and former Defence Minister Theophilus Danjuma. The Taraba police commissioner described the killers as “unknown gunmen.” “There is no confirmation yet, as to who they (the killers) are, and their motive. “But no item seen to be stolen,” he told The Nation, adding that the killers struck at 1:00am. Hon. Shiban Tikare, the Chairman of Takum local government council, also confirmed the killing of the four members of a family in a night attack. Shiban disclosed that a nine-month old baby, however, “mysteriously” survived the attack. “The attackers invaded the village at night and slaughtered four members of a family who were deep asleep. “We heard gunshots around 1:00am along Takum -Ussa road. While we were making efforts to mobilise policemen to the area, we heard sporadic gunshots at Mbikka Central, a community just at the outskirt of the town. “By the time we got there, four people were slaughtered like chickens – a man, his wife and two children. “A baby mysteriously survived the attack. The attackers whom we suspect to be Fulani herdsmen also attacked Basam, a village close to Rtd. Gen. Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma’s farmhouse, setting the entire village ablaze,” he said. Shiban lamented that the killings were going on in the area, in spite of the extension of Exercise Ayem A Kpatuma (Cat Race) by the federal government. Police spokesman, David Misal, an ASP, said the casualty figure was still not clear, “but four bodies were recovered.”
  2. A coastal erosion of high magnitude, yesterday, hit and wiped away the shore protection wall of Tuomo community in Burutu local government area, Delta state, with community folk scampering for safety, who were caught unawares. The incident, which is the first of it kinds in the community, also cut off the ongoing internal road project along the community waterfront. No life, however, was lost to the phenomenon, but indigenes were seen packing their belongings from the troubled spot to avoid being victimized in a repeated occurrence as at the time of filing in this report. An eye witness, Mr Oruferebo Hebrew, narrating how the incident occurred, said “yesterday around 5.30 pm, we were playing football in the field and suddenly we heard a high cracking sound at Foukonou area of the community. “Curious to know what really happened, we went to the scene only to see that the community shore protection wall has been broken by erosion. We were amazed to see the magnitude of the incident. “Many people have already packed out of the area because there are cracks everywhere and in case of any rainfall, it will be fatal and we don’t pray for that to happen. “Similar incident of lesser magnitude occurred in another spot of this shore protection last year, which sent fears into the hearts of the people living around the place”. The traditional ruler of Tuomo community, Chief Samuel O. Emokpo, speaking on the incident, called on the state and federal governments to intervene without delay to save lives and property. He said, “I want both the state and federal governments to intervene immediately because any moment from now, any rainfall in this area will aggravate the incident. “All the people living around the area are now packing their belongings to flee because of the new cracks that are becoming wider and wider every passing minute. “I also called on the company that is handling the job, Vibro Flotation Nig Ltd, to mobilize to site immediately to avert calamity to befall the whole community”. More so, a prominent chieftain of the community, Chief Akpola Ekperi, called on the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, owner of the job, to intervene without toying with the lives of the community folk. “What I observed here is earthquake and not erosion. I believe that the dredging work of a construction company handling the Tuomo-Torugbene-Ojobo road, which carried out dredging on this spot around 2007/2008 could have contributed to the incident. https://i.imgur.com/tcbFiiN.jpg “The shore protection job was started in 2007 and up till this moment, not even half of the job is done. When we queried the contracting firm, Vibro Flotation Nig Ltd over the slow pace of work, they said money has not been paid to them. “I called on the NDDC to intervene and call the contractor to site without wasting any time, because the situation needs urgent attention”, he said. 3. A leopard has left many people thoroughly shocked after wandering through a community and attacking a man in broad daylight. A report by Daily Mail UK shows that an enraged leopard that became trapped in a house mauled one man and attacked several others in a terrifying unbridled rampage. The big cat got stuck in the city of Indore, India, on Friday morning after straying into the town overnight. Waking up to discover the predator prowling down their street, petrified residents battened down the hatches and holed up in their apartments for several hours. Help was soon at hand as a large crowd flooded the Pallav Nagar area in a bid to drive the leopard away. Their efforts took a sharp turn for the worse, however, when the big cat mauled one of their numbers. Dramatic footage captured at the scene shows the incident unfolding. The video, shot on a camera phone from the other side of the street, shows several men attempting to cast a net over the entrance to a house. Dozens of people can be seen gathering in the street to aid the efforts to lock down the beast until the authorities arrive. But before they can completely cover the building with the net, there is a sudden movement from inside the house. Suddenly the leopard emerges and leaps over a gate before ducking under the net and throwing itself at the nearest volunteer. The man makes a brief effort to escape but he quickly realising it was in vain as the vengeful animal hurls him to the ground. Luckily for the stricken onlooker, the leopard then decides to chase off the other helpers, leaving him lying in the road. Forest Department officials were eventually informed of the incident and arrived at the scene 20 minutes later. But even they found it very difficult to trap the agile beast. They finally managed to use tranquiliser darts to sedate the animal and capture it. Although they missed the target five times before eventually hitting the cat. The leopard was rescued after three-hour long operation and shifted to the local zoo for first aid and treatment for trauma. According to forest officials, the leopard must have strayed into the city from the Ratapani Tiger Reserve, around 150km away.
